Passwordless Authentication – Microsoft Authenticator

 

All NEMCC user can use the Authenticator app for passwordless authentication.  To enable passwordless authentication, please follow the steps below.

 

  1. On your phone, open the Microsoft Authenticator App.
  2. Locate you Northeast Account and Tap on it.  
  3. You should see screen on the left below.
  4. Tap Enable phone sign-in.
  5. Review the information displayed on dialog shown below on the right.

You will most likely need to scroll down to see the Continue button.  

 

This does not allow Northeast to manage your device, it only registers it with Microsoft to help prevent fraud. You will need to have a password or Face ID setup to use passwordless authentication.


Once you click continue, you will be prompted to login and go through your multifactor authentication as you normally would.

 

After completing authentication, you will return to first screenshot, but will notice it now says “Disable phone sign-in

 

The last step is to tell your browser that you plan on using the passwordless login method.

 

The next time you login, when you get to the Enter password screen, you should see the option below the Password line that says, “Use an app instead”.  When you click that link, you should be presented with a number to enter in your authenticator app.

 

From now on, you will be presented with the number almost immediately upon entering your NetID to login.

 

If for some reason, you need to change back, click “Use your password instead”.
